Bold Abstract Wool Rug
This bold abstract wool rug is hand knotted in India from wool and measures 368 x 272 cm. Its colours are strong and layered: deep navy, pale grey-blue, mustard and red-orange, laid across the field in ragged patches that look like brushed paint.
The design up close
The bold abstract wool rug is built from irregular shapes with no repeat. A large pale grey-blue area runs down the centre and left, and deep navy fills the upper centre and much of the right side. Red-orange patches hug both side edges, most heavily along the right, and mustard yellow breaks through in the top left corner and across the lower half.
The edges of the shapes are ragged, with small islands and splashes of colour scattered through the navy and pale areas. Fine horizontal striations show in the wool when you look closely, giving each patch a brushed direction. There is no border or central motif, so the eye moves across the whole field.
Indian rugs and their weaving centres
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract rugs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This bold abstract wool rug is one of those modern pieces.
How it is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the pile is then cut level. Our records note vegetable dyes. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and this bold abstract wool rug is made from wool, so the bright colours sit in a pile that is built knot by knot.
Sizing this bold abstract wool rug
At 368 x 272 cm the rug covers about 10.0 square metres, which suits a large living room or a family room with a big sofa. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 74 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa and a coffee table can sit on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 64 cm at each end and 86 cm along each side.
The strong navy and red suit white or pale grey walls, and neutral furniture lets the colours carry the room. Keep the larger pieces of furniture light in tone so the rug stays the strongest colour in the room. A few pale cushions help the colours stand out without competing with them.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
