Red Floral Tabriz Rug
This red floral Tabriz rug was hand knotted in Iran in lamb’s wool. A deep red field carries a navy medallion at its centre, set among cream corners and framed by a wide red border. The size can be confirmed in our showroom.
The design up close
The centre of this red floral Tabriz rug holds a large lobed medallion. Its outer ring is navy blue with small cream and red flowers, and its middle is ivory around a red floral heart. Above and below it, the red field is filled with curling vines, leaves and flower sprigs in cream, blue and green, with small buds scattered among them.
The four corners of the central field are cream, each carrying red and blue flowers and tendrils. Around the field, a band of cream carries a fine scrolling vine, and narrow navy lines separate it from the wide red outer border. The outer border is covered with small cream, navy and green flowers, which keeps the eye moving around the edge.
Three colour bands make up the rug: the red centre, the cream surround and the red outer border. Across this red floral Tabriz rug, the navy medallion is the strongest colour, so it pulls the eye straight to the middle.
Tabriz and its weaving
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries. Its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs, from central medallions to all-over floral patterns and garden scenes. Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface.
A central medallion with florals is one of the classic Tabriz layouts. This red floral Tabriz rug follows that pattern, with its design built around the centre rather than repeated across the field.
How this rug is made
Hand knotting builds this red floral Tabriz rug one knot at a time on a loom, row after row. Lamb’s wool gives the pile its body, and the navy, cream and red shades are set side by side in the medallion and the field.
Sizing this red floral Tabriz rug
The size can be confirmed in our showroom, where we can lay it beside your furniture. A living room suits a medallion rug like this one, because the sofa and armchairs can face the centre and the medallion becomes the focus of the seating. In a dining room, leave space for the chairs to slide back without catching the edge.
The red field suits cream walls and timber floors, and the navy in the medallion pairs well with blue or grey furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
