Persian Bakhtiar Garden Rug
This Persian Bakhtiar Garden Rug was double hand knotted in Iran in wool and measures 369 x 259 cm. That is about 9.6 square metres of pile in a garden design, with a grid of small square compartments across the field. Most compartments hold a flowering plant on a ground of cream, dark red or navy. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The Persian Bakhtiar Garden Rug up close
The compartments run in a grid, about seven across and twelve down. The grounds alternate between cream, dark red and navy, and the flowers are drawn in pink, yellow, green and blue. Some compartments hold a vase or urn with a bouquet on top, while others show a single tall plant with leaves spreading to either side.
The border is a wide navy band with a cream vine scroll and small flowers, set between narrow rust and cream guard stripes.
Both short ends finish with a short cream fringe, and a narrow ivory band separates the grid from the navy border. On this Persian Bakhtiar Garden rug, the compartments are divided by thin lines, so each square reads as its own small garden.
Persian rugs from Iran
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. This rug is made from wool.
Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing: a rug hand knotted in Iran. A bakhtiar rug from Iran therefore belongs to the same family as every other Persian rug in the collection.
How it is made
Each knot in this Persian Bakhtiar Garden Rug is tied by hand, and the pile is double knotted. The colours are muted and earthy, and the flowers and vases are built up knot by knot, so each motif is placed by the weaver rather than printed onto the cloth.
Sizing it for your room
At 369 x 259 cm, this Persian Bakhtiar Garden Rug covers about 9.6 square metres. Under a 2.2 m three-seat sofa it leaves about 75 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa and two armchairs can all sit on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm for six leaves roughly 95 cm at each end and 85 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. A larger table of 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves about 65 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side, which is still enough room for the chairs. The navy and cream palette suits timber floors and neutral walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops this persian bakhtiar garden rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
